ABOUT OKYENA COLLECTIVE

Ɔkyena, meaning “tomorrow” in Twi, is a creative duo committed to preserving and reinterpreting Ghana’s cultural heritage through contemporary and speculative practices. Formed by Fara-Farai Awindor and Merci Ewuresi, Ɔkyena bridges fine arts, production design, photography, and visual storytelling with emerging 3D technologies.

The name Ɔkyena reflects our approach to time and futurity. Rather than Daakye, meaning “the future,” we chose “tomorrow” to express an immediate, adaptive vision of change. We respond to the rapidly shifting landscapes of culture and technology, while grounding our work in Ghanaian traditions and everyday objects that carry ancestral memory.

Our practice focuses on researching and digitally archiving tools, spaces, and materials embedded in daily Ghanaian life. We transform these archives into digital artworks and immersive experiences that reimagine cultural narratives within speculative futures. We see 3D models not only as a form of preservation, but also as a new medium for photography, storytelling, and collective memory, one that anticipates future possibilities such as holographic display and spatial interaction.
